The Heritage Social Projects Fund, whose purpose is to perpetuate the memory of those who died defending the Fatherland, create and restore monuments of military history, preserve historical heritage both in Russia and abroad, and develop international relations, has been established and is successfully functioning in the Volgograd region.

One of the most important components of the Fund's work is a search activity. Every year, the fund's employees, together with search teams, organize and carry out many search expeditions, including those which are within the framework of the Forgotten Names international project.

In the period from May 21 to May 23, 2021, a search expedition took place on the territory of the Malchevsky rural settlement of the Rostov region. During the expedition, the remains of six soldiers of the Italian army were discovered. All the dead Italians were part of the same artillery crew. Along with the remains of the soldiers, elements of ammunition and equipment were found.

Unfortunately, no posthumous medallions were found, which made it impossible to quickly identify the dead. Therefore, a DNA test was conducted at the Russian Forensic Medical Center  of the Russian Ministry of Health, the results obtained should provide a basis for further work to identify the remains.

After that, the Fund's employees turned to the Russian Foreign Ministry, Rossotrudnichestvo, the Association of International Military Memorial Cooperation "War Memorials" and the Italian Embassy in Moscow in order to reveal the fate and names of the dead soldiers.

The colleagues in Rome started working in the archives, trying to find the families of the dead. A preliminary list of several dozen names has already been compiled, whose relatives may be the Italian soldiers found in the Rostov region. The probable descendants of the found soldiers will have DNA tests done for comparative analysis.

Now the found remains are at the N.N. Miklukho-Maclay Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology (IEA RAS). The specialists of the institute will restore the life-time appearance of Italians using the Gerasimov's method of facial reconstruction on the skull. Unfortunately,  only three of six have preserved skulls, which, after restoration, can become the basis for the reconstruction of the appearance. Specialists of the Center for Physical Anthropology of the IEA RAS will conduct a comprehensive anthropological study of the remains in order to identify specific individual features, calculate lifetime height and body type. Afterwards, retro graphic photos and verbal description of the warriors' appearance will be presented, which will also help to identify them.

Besides, the Heritage Social Projects Foundation and Sergei Chikhirev, the representative of the War Memorials Association have prepared an exhibition dedicated to the defeat of the Italian Alpine Corps during the Stalingrad Battle in the winter of 1942-1943. It presents the authentic things of soldiers and officers of three Italian divisions: "Julia", "Cuneense", "Tridentina". February 1, 2022, while on a visit to the Volgograd region to participate in the events devoted to the Stalingrad Battle, Giorgio Starace, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Italian Republic to the Russian Federation, visited the exhibition.
